Bayonne, New Jersey - Facts & Figures
Bayonne, New Jersey is a peninsula in the Gateway Region, with Newark Bay to the west, the Kill van Kull to the south and New York Bay to the east. It was claimed by the Netherlands, but was established as part of New Jersey in 1861. Bayonne benefits greatly from being so close to the ports of New York and New Jersey, Staten Island, Jersey City, Newark, and Brooklyn. Surrounded by ports and bays, it's no surprise that Bayonne's economy is based on maritime and distribution enterprises. The Bayonne Center is the town's largest employer and its retail sales are aided by reduced sales tax. The town is home to the first wind turbine in the region, and The Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority is the second agency in all of New Jersey to begin using wind power.
