Camden, New Jersey - Facts & Figures
Camden, NJ was originally Fort Nassau, a fur trading post built by the Dutch West India Company in 1626 along the Delaware River. It was close in proximity to what became Philadelphia, which aided its population growth and economy. Even today, Camden workers commute to Philly. Its location on the river has made the town a center for maritime industries. From 1899 to 1967, New York Shipbuilding Corporation, at one time the largest and most productive shipyard in the world, made its home in Camden. The town was also the site from which the first nuclear vessel was launched. Currently, the three most important economic sectors in Camden are government, education, and healthcare. Camden has gone through a period of decline, struggling with crime rates, education, and urban dysfunction. Efforts of revitalization have been undertaken in many parts of town, focusing on Camden's link with Philadelphia to help liven up the economy once again.
