Coalinga, California - Facts & Figures
Originally established in 1888 as a coaling station, Coalinga, California's name is thought to have come from the railroad label "Coaling A." Coalinga was actually so full of minerals that they couldn't use normal drinking water and had to bring it in from another part of California until the 1960s. Today, the main sources of income still come from the land, mainly oil and agriculture. In addition, Coalinga is home to the Pleasant Valley State Prison and the Coalinga State Hospital, adding to the health care and government sectors of the economy.
