Belleville means "beautiful town" in French and was incorporated in its current form in 1910. Before then, the town had been organized in many forms and gone by many other names, including Second River and Washington. Initially, Belleville was connected to the rest of the country by the Passaic River and was a center for industry and manufacturing. Today it has highways running around and through it and is composed of mostly shops and homes. In modern Belleville, it is hard to even see the once important river from the town. Residents enjoy its beauty, with many parks and nature walks.
