Winston-Salem, NC has been made up of the two cities (the "Twin Cities") since 1913, though the area was settled in 1753 by Eastern Europeans. They chose the Winston-Salem area for its soil, weather, and water access. This group of people worked the land and enjoyed handmade art, two things that continue to be true of the residents today. Both then and now, the people of north Winston-Salem add to production and industry through their farming and craftsmanship. On the south side, however, the other town was being established in a more industrial way through commerce in tobacco and textiles. As the cities united, they became known as the City of Arts and Innovation, and today say of themselves that they create a balance between art and commerce, attracting businesses and culture to Winston-Salem. The town is home to six colleges and universities, including Wake Forest. Winston-Salem's economy is becoming even more diverse, with growing areas in finance, medicine and technology; adding to their established presence in nanotechnology research and manufacturing.
